Abstract

The Poetics of Insecurity turns the emerging field of literary security studies upside down. Rather than tying the prevalence of security to a culture of fear, Johannes Voelz shows how American literary writers of the past two hundred years have mobilized insecurity to open unforeseen and uncharted horizons of possibility for individuals and collectives. In a series of close readings of works by Charles Brockden Brown, Harriet Jacobs, Willa Cather, Flannery O'Connor, and Don DeLillo, Voelz brings to light a cultural imaginary in which conventional meanings of security and insecurity are frequently reversed, so that security begins to appear as deadening and insecurity as enlivening. Timely, broad-ranging, and incisive, Johannes Voelz's study intervenes in debates on American literature as well as in the interdisciplinary field of security studies. It fundamentally challenges our existing explanations for the pervasiveness of security in American cultural and political life.

Abstract

Abstract

The normative and formal presence of classical antiquity - as a mere figure of thought or a fully elaborated body of theory - is one of the great constants in the history of Western architecture. Yet the ideas that people have associated with ancient architecture have undergone major transformations through the course of history. This volume addresses how perceptions of antiquity have evolved over different periods in European architecture"--

Abstract

This book begins with the observation that contemporary artists have embraced and employed gravity as an immaterial readymade. Necessarily focusing on material practices – chiefly sculpture, installation, performance, and film – this discussion takes account of how and why artists have used gravity and explores the similarities between their work and the popular cultural forms of circus, vaudeville, burlesque, and film. Works by Rodney Graham, Stan Douglas, and Robert Smithson are mediated through ideas of Gnostic doubt, atomism, and new materialism. In other examples – by John Wood and Paul Harrison, Gordon Matta-Clark, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Trisha Brown, and Bas Jan Ader – mass and momentum, falling objects, and falling bodies are examined in relation to architecture, sculpture, and dance. In performances, projects and events curated by Bruce Nauman, Santiago Sierra, and Catherine Yass, gravity is resisted in Sisyphean ordeals and death-defying stunts. This account of contemporary art and performance, read through the invisible membrane of gravity, exposes new and distinctive approaches to agency reduction, authorial doubt, and redemptive failure

Abstract

According to the hypothesis underlying this book, a literary case is the critical counterpart of a level of information provided by the scale of a map. Indeed, as a map towards the mapped terrain, a literary fact is a critical case that transforms a state of affairs into another without changing this state of affairs, like a murder that would become a psychiatric affair without ceasing to be a murder. The same is true for Rousseau's self-writing, Hölderlin's mourning, Baudelaire's sublime, Mallarmé's fiction, Marguerite Duras's love, Paul Celan's date, Charlotte Delbo's skin, memory fitting at Chris Marker, or the character owned by Jean Rouch. All these cases have been the subject of specific studies and textual analyzes, who are gathered here to think the literary fact in its critical force. These texts have been written and ordered according to the relations that literature has with other fields of knowledge, other disciplines, other practices, or at different levels of otherness.
